Between the Quantitative and GIS Revolutions: Towards an SDA-centered GIScience

چکیده

This review paper is based on an observation that there exists a ‘generation gap’ between the quantitative and GIS revolutions, even though paradigmatic homology of spatial science is often presumed and cross-fertilization is straightforwardly promised. It is argued that each revolution needs to be edified to establish an integrative, sustainable research framework: SDA needs to become more accessible, applicable, and GIS-friendly; GIS needs to migrate from GISystems to GIScience to place conceptual and analytical aspects of handling geographic information on its center. An SDA rendered more GIS-friendly and practiced in a GIS environment can be seen as an ‘SDA-centered GIScience’. A ‘SAM-based ESDA-GIS framework’ is proposed to demonstrate the viability of the SDA-centered GIScience. Within the framework, local SAMs and associated ESDA techniques are expected to allow researchers to effectively investigate spatial dependence and heterogeneity.

GIScience Journals Ranking and Evaluation: An International Delphi Study

Researchers’ fame in most scientific fields is closely linked to their publishing capacity, both in terms of quantity and quality. In GIScience, as in other fields, this situation demands that the researcher evaluate and to be very familiar with the scientific journals in which they could publish. Some specialized journals (e.g. Journal of Citation Reports or JCR) are devoted to ranking these r...

Cognitive Research in GIScience: Recent Achievements and Future Prospects

In this article, recent achievements of cognitive research in geographic information science (GIScience) are reviewed and prospects for future directions discussed. Cognitive research in GIScience concerns human knowledge and knowing involving geographic information and geographic information systems (GIS). It includes both internal mental and external symbolic structures and processes, and is ...

Collaborative Geographic Information Systems: Origins, Boundaries, and Structures

This chapter describes the origins, boundaries, and structures of collaborative geographic information systems (CGIS). A working definition is proposed, together with a discussion about the subtle collaborative vs. cooperative distinction, and culminating in a philosophical description of the research area. The literatures on planning and policy analysis, decision support systems, and geographi...

Critical Issues in Participatory GIS: Deconstructions, Reconstructions, and New Research Directions

In the mid-1990s, several critical texts raised concerns about the social, political, and epistemological implications of GIS. Subsequent responses to these critiques have fundamentally altered the technological, political, and intellectual practices of GIScience. Participatory GIS, for instance, has intervened in multiple ways to try to ameliorate uneven access to GIS and digital spatial data ...
